In the July 2009 eNewsletter we invited members to share their concerns about how to best ensure that their innovative suggestions get a fair hearing.
The survey highlights an ongoing concern in line management. Simply, most people report experiencing unfair responses to their creative ideas.
And not just infrequently. Almost 10% of survey respondents said that it happens often. A majority 58% reported it happening a couple times, as opposed to 20% noting that it happens very rarely.
Of those people who have felt unfairly heard, more than half (55%) felt either 'anger' or 'confusion'.
With the benefits of hindsight, respondents reflected that a few lessons would have helped them get their idea properly tested. Top factors included:
- "My ability to present the idea better."
- "More experience working at the organisation."
- "I should have come to grips with the team dynamics better."
