Key inspiring Australian story: Stars Over Shiralee – Sheryl McCorry

Sheryl McCorryBook author: Sheryl McCorry

Publisher: Pan Macmillan Australia

Sheryl McCorry's memoir Diamonds and Dust was a runaway bestseller in 2007.

As the first woman in the Kimberley to run two million-acre cattle stations, Sheryl faced more than her share of challenges. Her life story, candidly captured in her first memoir, Diamonds and Dust, speaks of a life shaped by both the decisions she made and the circumstances she thrived in. (Read our review.)

After an impulsive courtship with an American, her first marriage ended soon after he tried to strangle her when she caught him pants down in an orgy.

Sheryl became the only woman in a team of stockmen. Here she learned the ins and outs of running rogue bulls and mustering cattle.

Sheryl’s second marriage, to Bob McCorry, a drover and buffalo shooter, began a lifelong relationship with numerous highs and lows.

Stars Over ShiraleeNow, in Stars over Shiralee, Sheryl brings her story up to date, picking up from the death of her Bob.

Moving to a property called the Shiralee, she meets a new man – one who pursues her with ardour and is seemingly a wonderful match for her. Sheryl agrees to marry him, but not before she is diagnosed with breast cancer.

Stars over Shiralee is the story of how a woman, having conquered life in her own terms, can succumb to circumstances that threaten to undermine all of her achievements.

The book is in turn a love letter to the outback that shaped her, and a deeply personal journey back to triumph.
