Managing your Inbox:
Snapshot survey
In the February 2010 eNewsletter we invited members to share their gripes on how well they manage the email Inbox.
Email is certainly a topic that gets people either engaged or enraged – sometimes feeling enslaved!
Notably, no one has no emails to contend with. The majority of us (70%) – on any day of the week – are handling from 10 to 99 unprocessed emails.
It's hard to conceive that being the average in the pre-email era. Imagine your grandmother or grandfather having up to 99 unopened letters on their
desk back in the 1950s.
Given that, it's not too surprising that over a third of respondents (38%) reported that they are not familiar with the Four Ds of managing emails: Do, Delay, Delegate and Delete.
And almost three-quarters do not feel on top of managing their Inbox.
Interestingly, whilst most respondents feel confident delegating emails to others, there's less confidence ion how well others delegate back to them.
'Taming the email beastie'
The following comment reveal the range of approaches respondents take to 'taming the email beastie':
"Just need to do a complete wipe-out without reading occasionally. I'm sure I wouldn't miss most of the ones I keep just in case."
"I manage emails in the same way that I manage all other mail - handle it just once, act, delete or file."
"Don't stress, deep breath it is only an e-mail."
"I would like to be more in control. I receive so many that are not for me."
